What is Concrete

When you think of what concrete is, you may think of a material that's used for sidewalks and parking lots. While this is the most common use for concrete, it's not the only one. Concrete is a versatile material made up of coarse and fine aggregate joined together with a liquid cement that when hardened solidifies over time. When you get a Concrete finished project you'll find that the material can be used for anything from walkways to driveway and much more. Because of this versatility concrete is used in a wide range of projects.

One of the most common uses for concrete is to build sidewalks. This is because while the concrete doesn't allow for very much movement once hardened it is a very durable substance that makes a great surface for walking on or driving on. Because of these characteristics, you will often find that concrete sidewalks are built on Portland cement. You may have to mix your own Portland cement if you don't have access to it or you can simply go to a home improvement store and purchase it in a premixed package.

Another way in which concrete is used is to build the patios and landscaping around your home. Unlike other types of concrete, Portland cement allows for the consistent thickness that you need for a perfect finished product. This consistency means that you can get the desired properties out of the mix without worrying about Portland cement thinning out as it cures. Another benefit of using Portland cement as the main ingredient in your concrete mix is that it contains small amounts of calcium and magnesium which give the mix the desirable properties of aggregate. These additives in the mix to make the product stronger and add to its strength while reducing the amount of variation between different mixes.

Once you have your mix built, you can start to focus on the specifics of your project. The mix you choose should be consistent both in consistency and thickness. If you use aggregate, the texture will not be as defined and therefore the workability will be less defined. This means that the mix will move and respond more to the physical forces of the structure than it would with the pure aggregate. In addition, the smaller aggregate crystals will clump together and reduce portability, not to mention preventing the structure from standing up straight.

When you are looking at the cement you will use to build your decorative concrete mixes, you should keep in mind that there are two basic types of aggregates. The first is in-fill and the second is decorative concrete mix. In-fill aggregates contain sand and / or cement to fill in large voids left behind after pouring the concrete mixture. Damaged in-fill aggregates cannot be used because they will compact and cause the voids to get wider.

On the other hand, decorative concrete mixes are prepared by spreading coarse aggregates over a framework that has a backing. It is important to know that when spreading concrete over a framework, it must be done in an even layer. This allows for better overall texture and definition while curing the mix for use in the building or other structures.
